Yeah she was very musical and tasteful at the MD 2000 fest... had a unique approach! Got upset about the typical "how does it feel to be a female drummer" question though... but I'm sure you would have too if you were her and that was the 100'000'000 time you heard it.
I know this might open up a huge topic of discussion, but what are the reasons that the drummer world is so male-dominated? I've been thinking about this a lot and can't really come up with convincing arguments.
There is a strength advantage, but this is only beneficial at really high speeds. But then again, look at Jojo - he's skinny and faster than most!

There are some great female drummers. But, like Dazzler says, they have always been a minority worldwide.
However, music schools have more and more women going into the drums and percussion field. Only here in Montreal, many percussion courses are attended by girls.
When you take a look at who's known and talented, just look at Teri Lyne Carrington, Sheila E, Hilary shown above, Camille Gainer, Suzanne Morissette, Maureen Brown, Vera Figueriedo from Brazil, and many more.
The problem, has been, that too many people point out these drummers as "female" drummers and I understand why some women get offended and just want to be called a drummer instead of "female drummer". It's a tough one, because most of these women look like beautiful women, on the drums. And when you are a minority, you always stand out more in a man's world.
As the years go by, more women will join our "Man's world" and, maybe , one day, they will feel more like "part of the gang" [img]wink.gif[/img]
Last note: I remember watching Stefanie Eulinberg playing with Kid Rock on the same stage as Metalica. Well, Stefanie kicked Lars' ass when it came to drumming.

Because no matter how hard i try to be fair, i still think of a female drummer as a 'female drummer'... or maybe even a 'hot female drummer'.
It isn't fair to them because it puts an asterisk next to what they do. Just like when Jackie Robinson was a 'black baseball player'... now they are baseball players who happen to be black. The only way for that to change is for more female drummers to come through the ranks. Take a look at Violin players, who ever says, 'hey, check out that female violinist'. Maybe, one day soon, it won't be as big of a deal once more Cindy Blackman's get out there and do it.
I mean, there are physical differences between men and women in everything. I have seen only a handful of basketball players who have the control on the court as their male counter parts... and they were probably at excess levels of testosterone. Women still 'look like' women when they play. Shoot me, i don't care, i really don't! They may sound like men when they play, but they look like girls. That tells me that it is a physical thing going on... i don't know what it is. However, still, those differences aside, differences that ARE there, all these women drummers still kick ass and it is only a matter of time before one comes out and does some Virgil sh*t and shows everyone women can do it all.
It IS an oddity now to see these women play.
However, i am as guilty as the next because i still regard it as an oddity.
Cindy Blackman is someone who I always thought was great too. Her live material with Lenny was always a pleasure to listen to.
Maybe they have trouble subdividing?

I think that if Hilary was a man, nobody would care about his drumming...
And she's really not even close to Cindy, TLC, Sheila E...
I don't understand why Robben Ford hire her sometimes...
How she plays on the MD Fest 2000, I find that it's boring !!!
Except for some girls like TLC (I love her : - ) !!!), Cindy, Sheila and surely some other girls that I don't know, it's like comparing the Nba with the Wnba, it's the same court, the same ball (maybe lighter...), the same rules but not the same sport.
I hope that you Guys will see what I mean...
